Marine Ecologies; Environmental protection and Hazards

By: Abdul Rahim

The workshop aims to give an overview of the key environmental issues in Gwadar and the surrounding coastal areas focusing on the main hazards and potentials. We will discuss the effects of climate change on the marine landscape, including sea erosion and intrusion and its effects on marine life such as coral and fish. The reduction of fish numbers has direct effects on the lives of fishermen and we will discuss the current situation with regard to the fisheries value chain, including the amount and types of fish caught, its processing and supply. The workshop will also look at some of the mitigation and adaptation plans currently underway in the area, and we will end the session with field visits to a mangrove nursery and plantation site and a visit to an area of sea erosion where mitigation efforts are underway.
