Somana holds MS (Disaster Management) degree from MCE (NUST) University and BS (Geology) degree from University of Peshawar. She has worked on the Tectonics and Sedimentary Geology of Potwar Basin, Hazara-Kashmir Syntaxes, Peshawar Plain, and Geomorphology, Geology, Glacial dynamics and natural hazard potential of the Northern Areas (Abbottabad to Passu), and flood hazard assessment during 2010 floods. Her research in MS titled “Deforestation as a future disaster for Pakistan” studied policy analysis and role of communities in mitigating disaster risk.
